“Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony.”- Mahatma Gandhi.
Human life has accelerated to a different level in the twenty-first century. People are so busy hustling, earning and living life the “competitive” way that all of it subtracts the core element- happiness from human life. Often there are surveys conducted to find out the happiness meter in people across different nations. In one of its surveys, UNESCO called Finland the “happiest” country.

There have been many studies done to find the reason behind Finland’s happiness. Once when a journalist went there along with nine other teachers they discovered the unique family and society of Finland. The sense of community and culture keeps them intact. The people there, have close associations with Art and keep themselves rooted in their traditions. Finnish people have an unbound love for nature. Besides all of this the basis of their happiness is the “Finnish Education.” Teaching is blended with nature. Adventure trips like going to the jungle and crossing the jungle are meant to teach children and bring them close to nature. In Finland, the same teacher teaches you for three years which makes children comfortable. They create a beautiful bonding with their teachers.

If a visitor goes there, they conduct a happiness tour. This is a unique experience for anyone who visits Finland for the first time. The tourist is picked up from the airport and dinner is hosted for him. Then either by bus or by foot the person goes to Oulu city. The guides over there speak French and Dutch. As soon as one enters Oulu city, one would find Toripolliisi, it is a bronze sculpture located at the market square in Oulu, Finland. It was made by sculptor Kaarlo Mikkonen in 1987 and it was named in honour of the ones who patrolled the marketplace.

Societal structure is another thing that is emphasized upon in the tour. Tourists meet women entrepreneurs and some others who are in the teaching sector. They talk about how they manage their professional and personal life together. If a woman is not happy then most likely her children won’t be happy either and thus the entire family too. A focus is laid on how women who are in their mid 30’s and 40’s focus on being happy and thereby making their families happy.

Nallikari is an eatery where one can have dinner. It is a beautiful place. One may take pictures. The design shop is famous for its cardboard which is made from timber. They make handicrafts and it is called “Lovi Art“. They also conduct workshops for people who want to learn it. Visitors are shown and they can also participate in the workshop.

Grandmothers are very important to a Finnish family. Young children often visit their grandmothers, especially during their Christmas holidays. A tourist is also made to visit a grandmother’s home. She talks about her life and family and shows the visitors the architecture of their homes like chimneys. Grandmothers there are well acquainted with new technology and keep forward their thoughts of the changing world.

Hailuoto is a dredging place. It did not exist about two thousand years ago. One can have lunch at Hailouto Organic Brewery, where they have an Italian chef. Lunch is accompanied by a beer. The visitors then can walk down to the Fishing Village which has a wooden way. Men there knit sweaters promoting Hailuoto sweaters. They also teach how to spin a sweater. When there was no fishing season earlier, knitting sweaters fetched money for them.

Another aspect of the basis of Finnish happiness is its activity centres for youth where they let the youth discover being self-sufficient and also respect nature. The way Finland has invested in experiential Education is worth emulating for governments around the world. Here is a picture of the telescope that is unstalled in one such activity centre on top of the hill in the middle of a jungle which speaks volumes of learning with nature.

It is a three-hundred-year-old tradition to half-domesticated reindeers. The reindeers are farmed for six months and sent to the wild for the rest of the six months. Husky, which is a breed of wild dog is also domesticated and used for sledging.

The Finnish Happiness Tour will bring forth to you a cottage life and the peace with which the Finnish people live. The calm and solace which they have in life can for sure be felt in a happiness tour. One can feel the warmth of the Finnish cottage life in the picture below where one can have endless discussions over a cup of coffee or beer or a simple berry juice.
